Do not know what to say when on your artist blog.   Before you upload any art work, try talking about your art, to family, friends and yourself.  Talking about your art makes it real, makes you real and gives you a great opportunity to develop your story.   You might begin to see a story developing about the piece, and also some thing thematic about your entire body of work. The things that you talk about they belong in your blog post.

As you are talking about the work, there are probably several stories that come to mind.  Telling the story will make you and your art real for your collectors.  The story could be why you chose the composition, what you found challenge and rewarding about the creation,  perhaps a memory that came to you while you were talking about the piece, color, size, shape -- Pretty much anything relevant to your masterpiece.

Your collectors are buying you not just your art.  They need the story, and at some level you need the story too!  There's more... There's always more.

Just imaging this conversation in a collectors home,

Collector:

Oh do you like that piece, me too!  The artist said, he really enjoyed painting children's faces because most of them have expressions that are not necessarily innocent, but seem to be capable of going from angelic to mischievous   in the bat of an eye.  I found it on the Internet and just had to have it.

Collector's Friend:

What did you say his name is?  Where is his website?

It could happen, it can happen.   Write your story, entertain your tribe, and keep painting.

After reading Art and Money, I believe, I have the expertise and knowledge to become a successful artist online in a very short period of time. If you would like to follow along, I recommended you get yourself a copy of Art and Money by Zoe Westhof and Chris Guillebeau. Chapter One lays the ground work. It talks about the old way of becoming an artist toiling strugling hoping that some day some one -- a wealthy patron would discover your work. Sure It can probably still be done that way but the Internet changes all of that allowing a new dynamic to unfold.

I will work on this during primetime hours after my day job, on days when I am not helpingout with the Grandchildren. I read the book over the weekend and I have listened to most of the interviews during my commute. It's amazing to hear the artist talk about how they use the Internet and work with it as if it were an extension of their art. Not really marketing but just continuing on with their work, discussing what is important to them and developing a following just by being genuine. More on this in the days ahead.

The second chapter starts to put you to work . There is a great goal setting exercise. The book recommends sitting down with a pen and paper and writing dow all the reasons why this is the right decision for you and your career. Lets do that now. Here is my list:

  • Fame and Fortune
  • Get my work out to the public
  • Can bring my work directly to the market
  • Put me in a position to produce more
    • Develop a distinctive body of work
  • Make a sale
  • Support my family
  • Work for myself
  • Full Artistic Freedom
  • Learn From Others
  • Teach Others
  • Build a an easy duplicatable method for artist worldwide
Next we set some serious goals.
